The virtual test stand 2: Modal analysis prevents noise Historically, time-consuming shaker tests followed by performance optimization would help prevent a shielding system from oscillating at undesirable resonant frequencies. But at VICTOR REINZ we have a faster, more efficient method for modal analysis. We completely assess material and structural properties – including interactions between bottom layer, top layer and inlay – by applying finite elements analysis methods. Based on a 3D model of the CAD data, and taking the fixing points into account, a mesh returns accurate data about the shielding system’s resonance frequency via oscillation behavior. This test allows every shielding system to be improved iteratively, speeding up the development process considerably. If the modal exhibits areas that are likely to oscillate at a critical frequency – for example 200 Hz, a typical frequency at high live loads – this behavior can be eliminated by means of defined stiffening ribs, increased material thickness or additional fixing points. This ensures that the shielding system absorbs noise and doesn't produce any itself from the very first prototypeThe virtual test stand 3: Harmonic analysis for a longer life To ensure durability, a shielding system’s amplitude values – the compressive and tensile load cycles under all vehicle operating conditions – must be measured. This is possible with harmonic analysis, which can take the damping values of the used materials into account (unlike modal analysis). Harmonic analysis also eliminates the need for tedious test series on the shaker. Ultimately, this reduces the time between design and production of a perfect series product. We also differ from other suppliers by providing close-to-production tooling from the start. Thanks to our excellent prototyping facilities, the first functional prototype is available not long after release of the constructional data.
